In 1999, FVVS began drafting a domestic violence criminal code that was ultimately passed by the Tribal Council in July of 2000. This code contained strict guidelines for the treatment of domestic violence related crimes including mandatory arrest, a twenty-four hour holding period for perpetrators, a no-drop policy by the prosecution, mandatory completion of a twenty-six week Batterer’s Re-Education Program, a firearms prohibition, and enhanced sentencing for repeat offenders.
